Additional Studies Showcase Benefits of BLIS K12® Probiotic for ENT Health in Children and Adults

Feb 19, 2013 (St. Charles, MO USA) – Stratum Nutrition announces the recent publication of two new studies evaluating BLIS K12® oral probiotic (Streptococcus salivarius K12) and recurrent pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis by S. pyogenes.  The independent studies were published in the International Journal of General Medicine and Expert Opinion on Biological Therapy with encouraging findings in both children and adults.

One independent research study evaluated the effectiveness of BLIS K12® oral probiotic for supporting ear and throat health in children(1). Published in the International Journal of General Medicine, an Italian research team demonstrated that they could minimize the reoccurrence of common childhood ear and throat infections, such as otitis media and tonsillitis by around 40% and 90% respectively. Conducted over 10 months, 82 children aged between 4-5 years with a history of recurrent ear and throat infection, were recruited for this study to determine the effect of 90 days of treatment with either the BLIS K12® probiotic or a placebo. Researchers concluded “Prophylactic administration of S. salivarius K12 [BLIS K12®] to children with a history of recurrent oral streptococcal pathology reduced episodes of streptococcal pharyngeal infections and/or tonsillitis as well as episodes of acute otitis media.”

BLIS K12® Probiotic Publication of Complete Genome Sequence

November 28, 2012 (St. Charles, MO USA) – Stratum Nutrition announces the recent publication of the complete genome of BLIS K12 (Streptococcus salivarius K12).  The study entitled “Genome Sequence of the Lantibiotic Bacteriocin Producer Streptococcus Salivarius Strain K12” was published in the Journal of Bacteriology (2012), 194(21):5959. DOI: 10.1128/JB.01268-12. The sequence data file was deposited in DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under master record accession number ALIF00000000.
 
Complete genomic sequencing of BLIS K12 was completed through collaboration with Nestle. Having knowledge of the complete S. salivarius K12 genome significantly contributes to our understanding of the role of this species in the microbial ecology of the mouth and throat and its beneficial role on human health. Dr. Barry Richardson, CEO of BLIS Technologies states, “the completion of the BLIS K12 genome sequence is a significant milestone in the commercial development of the BLIS K12 probiotic and once again confirms the excellent safety of the organism.”

ARTINIA® Clinical Trial Results on OxLDL Published in EJCN

September 11, 2012 (St. Louis, MO)   Stratum Nutrition, a Novus International Business focusing on nutrition through functional and specialty ingredients, announces the publication of its clinical trial “Chitin-Glucan Fiber Effects on Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein: A Randomized Controlled Trial” in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (doi:10.1038/ejcn.2012.121).

This gold-standard study design was a 6-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluating the insoluble fiber chitin-glucan (derived from the Aspergillus niger mycelium), commercially available as ARTINIA®. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of chitin-glucan (CG), alone and in combination with a potentially anti-inflammatory olive oil (OO) extract, for reducing oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL) in subjects with borderline to high LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels.

New Published Data on BLIS K12® Effects on Halitosis

 August 29, 2012 (St. Charles, MO  USA) – Stratum Nutrition announces the recent independent publication by a Swiss research team at the University of Basel, evaluating BLIS K12 for its ability to inhibit bacteria responsible for the severe bad breath  in the oral cavity , known as halitosis.  The study entitled “Antimicrobial activity of Streptococcus salivarius K12 on bacteria involved in oral malodour” has been published in the journal Archives of Oral Biology (2012), doi:10.1016/j.archoralbio.2012.02.011.

This study reconfirms  an earlier clinical study of 23 subjects by Dr. J. Burton and co-workers, (published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology, v100 (2006) 754–764) where Streptococcus salivarius K12 was shown to be effective at reducing the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the exhaled breath, which are responsible for chronic oral malodor and halitosis.
